Julie Kennedy

Picture
Born in Christchurch, Julie Kennedy is currently a Picton-based writer. The Marlborough Sounds and local landscape inspire her writing, both non-fiction and poetry.

Her book Katherine Mansfield in Picton was published in 2000 and was one of 40 books selected by NZSA to be on display at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2012. On her website she has a literary walk around Picton tracing Katherine Mansfield's childhood visits to the town and the Beauchamp connection. She has also compiled a Chronology of Picton and Queen Charlotte Sound (Volume 1 to 2009) for the Picton Museum. Both publications are available for sale at the museum.

She has poetry in a number of anthologies and in the Aotearoa Sound Archive. In 2011 she co-edited a poetry anthology, Reflections, and in 2016 edited Impressions: Picton Poets an Anthology. Two of her poems have been selected for display in the Nelson Museum window.
Julie was Top of the South Branch Delegate to the NZSA National Council from 2008 to April 2010. Her skills include proof reading and editing and she often gets involved in Council-initiated community projects. She occasionally tweets
@ JulieKennedy17. She is an active member of Picton Poets and Writers of Picton, and is on the committee that organised the inaugural Writers’ Forum in Picton in 2014 and subsequent Indie Writers' and Publishers' Forums.

For a number of years Julie belonged to Eco Artists NZ, but this has ceased to exist. She continues her contribution to caring for the environment with membership of Forest and Bird, Kaipupu Point Wildlife Sanctuary and Picton Dawn Chorus, an organic approach to gardening, and a personal belief in a sustainable lifestyle.

Future writing plans include publishing a selection of her poetry and a non-fiction illustrated book based on Journals kept by Captain James Cook in the 1770s in Queen Charlotte Sound.
