Karen Stade is a researcher and writer of Nelson history, with more than 30 years of professional writing experience.
Her latest book, Driven by the Wind: the Profile of Captain Henry Rose (2019) tells the exciting adventures of a boy who went to sea as a 14-year old apprentice in 1847 and rose to command some of the fastest clipper ships in the world. As a respected ship’s captain he brought immigrants to Canterbury and was elected to the newly commissioned Wellington Harbour Board. Daring to Be Different: The Nayland College Way 1966-2016, was written for the school’s 50th Jubilee reunion in 2016. Pasta, Prayer and Promise: the story of Nelson’s Italian Community 1860-2014, was co-researched and written with Karen Price, and was launched in Nelson and Wellington in 2015. Meet You At The Church Steps: a Social History of a Nelson landmark, was published in October 2013 to mark the centennial of Nelson City’s iconic granite steps. |
Karen’s other books include Appo Hocton, New Zealand's First Chinese Immigrant, Nelson 1842-1920, published by the Nelson Provincial Museum in 2010, and The School by the Sands: A Century of Tahunanui School (2008). She has researched and written family histories and was a contributing researcher and writer for the Top of the South Island history website, The Prow. She has curated several Nelson Provincial Museum exhibitions, including ‘Kiwi Keith’, celebrating the life of former Prime Minister, Sir Keith Holyoake, and another telling Appo Hocton’s story. She was also content-curator of the museum’s developing World War One centennial exhibition, which examined Nelson’s wartime experience, both at home and at the Front.
Karen is a former president of the Nelson Historical Society and edits the society’s annual journal of historical essays. In 2017 she was awarded a Queen’s Service Medal for services to historical research and the community.
