Lifelong reader and writer Liz Mahoney was seven years old when she brought her treasured 'Christopher Robin' books on the six weeks voyage that brought her family from Northern Ireland to NZ. She had her first article published as a ten-year-old writing about the Auckland Dolls’ Show in the NZ Woman’s Weekly.
In her adult writing life, she bought a small local newspaper in Kumeu in North West Auckland in 1981 for $5000 and ran it from her railway house. After several jobs in mainstream media she decided she was better suited to working for herself. She was a publisher-editor-designer for ten years before selling up and editing another community paper at Albany. Several years of freelance writing followed, with articles published in NZ Geographic and NZ Listener. She practised writing creatively while making a living as a single mother of two daughters, and later completed a BA in English before working as internal communicator at Waitakere City Council. |
Liz now plays with words for pleasure and profit from her Motueka Valley base. In 2010 she started a new life off the grid, working on creative writing in between copywriting, writing web content and mental health support. She also makes pottery and has a Bed & Breakfast called The Writer’s Room that she runs from her home at Te Manawa Eco Village (adjoining Kahurangi National Park) with epic 360 degrees views of river, sea and mountains.
