I'm living in Nelson now, but I may move as it's a sight too cosy for my liking. I always enjoyed writing, and at school I wrote bad poetry and a novel set in ancient Rome. But when I grew up I wrote book reviews for the Dominion Post, the Listener and City Voice. I wrote feature articles about tramping and kayak trips for Adventure and Wilderness magazines. And then the big time – two books about Pakistan, where I stayed in a remote mountain village for several months. I gave up trying to get them published and self published instead: Shimshal and Women of Shimshal. My most recent literary adventure is Big Pockets, a sexual memoir written under the pseudonym Laura Strange.

Although I love writing I don't write unless I have an idea for something I want to say that others might be interested in. I don't think I have any imagination at all because I write non-fiction, my aim being to write as clearly and as well as I can. I would like my writing to be surprising, but I haven't really worked on that. I'm in my seventies, so I'd better get a move on!
