Patricia Berwick

Picture
Patricia Berwick was born in Dunedin, raised in Christchurch, and currently lives in Picton. Brought up to believe she should visit her UK relatives, she travelled widely throughout the Pacific, China, South-East Asia, Tamil Nadu – India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, the UK and the USA. She met her relatives and many other fascinating people in the twenty or so years spent outside of New Zealand.

Educated in both New Zealand and the United States, she studied Anthropology, Chinese and Education during the exciting, but difficult, times of the 1960s and 1970s. Her education and travel led to encounters that formed a multifaceted worldview and provided a strong foundation for her novels. She has written non-fiction, histories, and adventure-thriller stories, and has more than forty academic and industry-focused publications.
Patricia’s research includes cross-cultural studies, researching in non-western contexts, business organisation, and Māori land claims. Since 2012 she has published five novels: The Shattered, A Fragile Strength, Island of Secrets, Peril and Paradise and The Tablets of Ur. She has also published a history book, Unauthorized Power: Parihaka - a Social History and a series of stories for young children. Magic to Mindfulness: a Pathway into Science was published in 2020. The central aim of the book is to encourage young people to enjoy science through simplifying its complexity. Since then she has also published a series of children's books telling stories about iconic native animals.
